First let me just say that I have become completely smitten with Hockey. My first experience with it was watching a game on tv with an old boyfriend and I was amazed at how focused he was on the game. He could actually keep up with the puck. Where as I was lost. Fast forward almost 20 years later and my very dear friend, Cheryl came down to NC for a conference and a visit and she begged me to go to this game with her. I was reluctant to say the least. Me, trapped at RBC Center with 40K people watching a sport I knew nothing about and as far as I was concerned didn’t care about.
Boy was I wrong. It was my first NHL game. Pittsburgh Penguins @ Carolina Hurricanes. Saturday, 4 April 2009 – forever a hockey fan from here on out. I was SO impressed with the grace and beauty of the sport. We all know it is violent — (went to a fight and a hockey game broke out) but the speed and talent these people have was nothing short of AMAZING.
I had seen pictures of Sidney Crosby and I heard of his being the Saviour of the NHL aka Hockey Jesus — but to see this man skate took my breath away.
So I watched only Penguins games from then on … I know there are other teams, I know there are other good players … but even though the Penguins didn’t win that night they won me.
I am going to be blogging more about the joys of being a hockey fan — the newness of it all. I am ready to learn all there is to know about it.
I already knew a little from that brief teenage trist with a hockey fan. But now with NHLnet and NHL Center Ice … and countless blogs and groups … I am ready to learn more.
